International airport Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia is a Spanish airport, one of the two on the Canary Island, Tenerife. The airport is located in the southern part of the island, within the city limits of Granadilla de Abona, about 60 km southward of Santa Cruz and 71 km south of Tenerife Norte airport. The airport was opened in November 1978 by the Spanish Queen Sofia, who became its patron. During the first year, the airport served a million passengers. The current network of domestic and foreign connections is provided by over one hundred airlines. Tenerife in comparison with the other Canary Islands is most commonly visited by tourists. Tenerife Sur Airport serves over 9,1mln passengers per year.
